Stocking Your Storm Shelter

You already know how important it is for every homeowner to consider installing a storm shelter. What many people forget, though, is that stocking the shelter with the necessary food, water and supplies is just as essential. If the shelter is left empty, then it probably won’t provide enough protection after a storm has passed. It’s fairly simple – and very smart – to stock your storm shelter with food, water, and living essentials to make sure your family is prepared to weather both a storm and its aftermath. Winter Preparedness

Are you ready for Oklahoma’s unpredictable cold weather season? Here are some basic tips to help prepare for extreme cold, snow and ice.

PREPARE YOUR CAR

You can avoid many dangerous winter travel problems by planning ahead. Have maintenance service on your vehicle as often as the manufacturer recommends. In addition, every fall, do the following:

  • Check the antifreeze level. Add antifreeze as needed.
  • Replace windshield-wiper fluid with a wintertime mixture.
  • Replace any worn tires, make sure the tires have adequate tread, and check the air pressure in the tires.
  • During winter, keep the gas tank at least half full to help avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car in the event of a breakdown!!! Things like a blanket, flashlight, extra gloves or winter coat, matches, bottled water or even a snow shovel can all come in handy if stranded or broken down in winter weather.

PREPARE YOUR HOME

  • Listen to weather forecasts. Okies know that the weather can change on a dime, but weather forecasts can sometimes provide us with several days notice of severe winter weather.
  • Check your emergency supplies, especially when extreme cold is predicted.
  • Have your chimney or flue inspected each year.
  • Install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector. Test the batteries each month and replace them twice a year.
  • Weatherproof your home. Cover outdoor faucets and vents. Check weather stripping on doors and windows. Cut any tree branches that could potentially fall on your home.
  • Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside.
  • Keep Ice Melt or kitty litter on hand for icy sidewalks and driveways.
  • ALWAYS Bring your pets indoors during the winter.
